Sheffield is a city we cover extensively, and heat pump enquiries here have grown steadily since the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant rose to £7,500. The thing that decides whether a heat pump succeeds is design, not brand: a unit sized from a postcode calculator will disappoint, while one sized from a room-by-room heat loss survey will heat the same house comfortably through a Sheffield winter.

The city gives us a wide range of properties to work with. The larger semis and detached homes across the leafy south-western suburbs — Ecclesall, Fulwood, Dore — often have the plot space for an outdoor unit and reasonable insulation to work with. The denser terraced and post-industrial stock across the north and east typically needs a more careful design: larger emitters in the coldest rooms so the system can run at lower, more efficient flow temperatures.
